RGB Icicles Sequence Question
« on: December 22, 2015, 08:02:14 AM »
So I put up RGB icicles this year. I want to make the effect of a "Jumping House" with them. What is going to be the easiest way to do this? My thought was to make 2 custom models, 1 with the even channel nodes and 1 with the odd number channel nodes. That is quite a bit of work though and was just wondering if there is an easier way?

Thanks,
Roger

make a model of the top row of your icicles and a model of the rest of your icicles.

So for the example below - top row is 1,6,9,13,15,20,23,27
and rest is 2,3,4,5,7,8,10,11,12,14,16,17,18,19,21,22,24,25,26,28

1  6  9    13  15  20  23  27
2  7  10  14  16  21  24  28
3  8  11        17  22  25
4      12        18        26
5                  19

4      12        18        26
5                  19

Thanks for the help. Does Xlights know the channels are not consecutive? So in your example, let's say for simplistic sake that Node 1 is start channel 1. Will XL know that node 6 is channels 16-18 and so on? The reason that I ask is because I went through my Icicle models and made Odd and Even models. I am not home so I cannot see how it looks, but the preview window looks like it is turning them all on except the 1st node which is of coarse a different start channel.

Thanks,
Roger

I just verified that even though I made 2 separate custom models of my odd and even nodes, if I turn odd on they all light. If I turn Even on they all light. Not sure what I am doing wrong here. In my even model that starts with node 2 should the start channel be the same as the odd?

Thanks,
Roger

Answered my own question. Set both odd and even to same start channel and now is working as I expected.

Yes xLights keeps track.  It doesn't care if you skip around, skip whole chunks, stay consecutive, whatever.  For example I have a Papagayo style singing face with all the different mouth combinations.  I have one model that I use for my "singing faces" song and a different model of the same face for everything else.  the different model for everything else has just the static smiling face which skips all the channels of the other mouth movements.  Another example is all my openings (windows, doors, etc.).  I define them as you expect with all 4 sides and as "part of my display".  Then I create models of just each side for each opening so I can do things like bounce easily between the left side and the right side of a window (or top and bottom or whatever) this time unchecking "part of my display" so they are not in the layout but that part of the model still lights up when I place an effect.  One of the powerful tools of xLights in my opinion (redefining the same model in different ways).
