Timing lag within a song in Xlights
« on: December 30, 2015, 01:10:50 PM »
I'm hoping someone can help determine why this is happening.

I have a 2:40 song.  The longer the song goes, the more out of sync the beats are.  However, if I stop and re-start the song (instead of starting from the beginning), it on beat. I've created a short clip where the song goes awry.  Started the song from the beginning.  I then stop the song, and re-start at the beginning of the beats, and it seems ok.  Just for fun, I re-saved the mp3 in audacity again, verifying CBR (i use 128kbps), and updated the media file in xlights.  No change.

Video showing the time lag.    First part is from the sequence when playing from the beginning.  You can see the lag.  I then stop and re-start, and its on the beat.

This seems to be happening to other songs for me as well.  I'm using Xlights Ver 4.3.00, but i re-loaded the song in 4.2.15, and still seems to be there.   Any ideas?

I had one MP3 file where I had to try about 4 or 5 different bit rates before I got one that didn't have this exact problem.  I think 160kbps worked for that particular song.  To be honest I don't think there is a hard and fast rule about how to create an MP3 that doesn't have this problem.  The issue seems to be Windows Media player is not capable of starting at exact play points.

Thanks, that's a great plan.  I'll try the same.

Try 192k, constant bit rate.  Believe that is recommended.

I don't think 192k is recommended, it's the default in audacity so it just makes it easy and that's what most use.

I had an MP3 where 128k and 192k did not work but 160k seemed ok.

I think most would agree that the quality difference between 128k to 192k is negligible. So, as long as it works is what counts.

Any idea how Vixen manages to do this?

I've only ever seen this lag with xLights and LOR, not Vixen.

I have.

O wow. Ok, I guess it's track dependent then. I assume you used CBR. I may have just gotten lucky so far.

Actually, looking at the OP again - it's a different problem that I'm used to. I always have an issue starting in the middle of the song. When I start from the beginning it's fine.

The OP has the opposite problem. Which one have you seen?
