Show Computer
« on: March 22, 2016, 09:39:42 AM »
I am looking to replace my laptops and computer with something up todate, but a good bang for my buck that will last me for a few years.

The last laptop I purchassed in 2004 2005 was a Toshiba Satellite Pentium M processor with 1.86Hz 781MHz and 1.99 GB of ram running XP Professional. We all know XP is a thing of the past and now Crome is not being supported.

All I need it for is internet, MS Word, I use a cad program called Vectorworks,  I do professional concert lighting off-line programming on it, listen to music ect.

Im looking to support all that stuff that is currently running on XP with no issues. Im also looking to use it to program in XLights / Nutcracker then actually run the show off a Rasberry PI.

What kinda of brand and specs you recommend.

Based on what you have posted, you might look at this one.

http://www.microcenter.com/product/461006/Aspire_E5-574-58JM_156_Laptop_Computer_-_Charcoal_Gray

Intel I5
6gb RAM
1TB hard drive
15.6 screen
KB with number pad
and only $330.

BUT it does say "in-store only"  so if you are not near a microcenter then.......

VectoWorks recommends 8GB Ram
i5 i plenty powerful enough for everything you mentioned
Win10

Do you have a budget in mind. As jnealand suggested there are some great deals out there. Personally, I build my own to spec for desktop use. For laptops I would suggest something that will last you several years. All of the assembly line laptops have inherent risks so a good warranty is a must.

Thanks for all the great feed back. Now on my next question. I have an older version of Vectorworks that runs on XP just fine for what I do. What are the chances the program will run on Windows 10 with out buying a newer version of Vectorworks. Same goes for older versions of MS Office or my USB printer or Vegas Studio that I used in my XP Laptop.

There's a 23.2% chance the program will still run.  I had to buy the latest version of Sony Vegas Pro...my version that ran on Win7 didn't work on Win10.
