Roofline layout
« on: March 22, 2016, 05:28:22 PM »
First off I want to thank you xlight guys for great program for RGB, I had alot of fun with it last year. Now attached is my layout of my upper roofline and all though I did get it lit up last year I could not get it to layout right. After a little break I am now getting back at things. I may be missing something but I could not reverse some of my strings annd get them to display the way I wanted. In vixen 3, ( not comparing programs) as i am setting up my dislay items i have an option to reverse each string. I know you can reverse an effect but that would be a big pain to have to do each time. I also know that some controllers can do it as well, but that could add issues if I am switching different ports or controllers. So the question is am I missing something ?  This will also be the same layout for my Icicle lights . If there is not an easy way could it be a feature request   ;))

Thankyou Joe

Did you adjust the starting point of your models, lower left versus lower right, to reverse the strings in xLights?

No I did not as I  thought that was just for matrixes not straight line Items. I can give it a try though and see if that soves my problem.

On the model list there is a node layout button.  This will show the node layout for the model.  Look at this before and after you change the starting point.  Top/Bottom left will start at the left.  Top/Bottom right will start at the right.  The node layout will show how it's laid out.  Since it's a line, the top and bottom will be the same.

If there was a way to display the lowest and highest channel number in a model on the layout screen, that would help.  Something like green for the first node and red for the last.  Wouldn't want it to be on all the time, but would help when first laying things out.

The node layout doesn't spell things out?

That works well in general, but can be confusing when you use a single string model in the vertical direction.  The node layout will always be show in the horizontal direction for that type of model, no matter what orientation the model is on the layout.  So you have to keep track of your combinations of Right/Left and which way you rotated the model (+ or - 90 degrees).  It's not too difficult to do, but Sean asked if there was something that would more clearly label this, and I think that would do such.

Great point, didn't think of vertical orientation.

I'm wondering if there could be a arrow drawn showing the direction?  I could envision this only showing up if you hover the cursor over a single string model for a few seconds.

So what happens on a line that you've rotated vertically if you spin it around 180 degrees?  Does it change the direction of the effects or does it still know where Top is?

With the ability to change the starting location, why would someone invert the line? I can't think of a good reason. If there isn't a good reason then I would say the effects should remain the same, therefore know where top is.

Well I'm not at home to verify.  I thought all lines started out horizontal so wouldn't it depend on which direction you pulled the handle to rotate as to which end it on Top?  I'm not sure our logic for saying the controller is on Top has any smarts to it to know which way you rotated the line to make it vertical.  In fact at that point it's probably a Left/Right setting.

It is all a Left/Right setting or a rotation. The top/bottom doesn't mean anything for the single line model that I can see.  So to make an effect go up or down, you have to choose a left/right effect on that model.
