Model for Maravian Star
« on: April 03, 2016, 09:29:56 PM »
I have a Moravian Star that has 18 lighted points,
really only 17, 18 is on the bottom and needed for mounting and wires.

https://youtu.be/xAw06tyBy-Y

Here are my notes on the build

The top is how it is actually put together
Top is #1
2 thru 5 are the top diagonals
6 thru 13 is the center and so on.

I tried the sphere models and only got a circle, so they are not working or I do not know how to use them.

I thought creating 3 different custom models might be the answer.

The first with a vertical axis thru the top and bottom.
The second, a horizontal axis thru the front and back.
The last, a horizontal axis thru the left and right.

I tried a bar and color wash effect, and the lights followed the node numbers, not the node positions in the model.

Its only 18 channels how do I model it so I can create effects?

Plasmadrive mentioned you helped with his dodekahedron.
That is next on my list by the way.  Probably not till next year.

Joel

since you have only 18 nodes, to make the custom model work try imagining two things

First a Horizontal dropping down. When would each spike light up, put those numbers in correct place.
Next finish moving the 18 numbers by imagining a vertical bars effect going from left to right.

After doing these two alignments you will have bars working.
You always have on, colorwash, twinkle, strobe, shimmer, fire, spirals

With only 18 nodes you are limited , but those should look good.

Ok I finally got back to this

The first effect is Bars. applied to the Top Axis model posted earlier.
7 white and 1 red  2 repetitions, 1 cycle
direction Right.

Everything is correct except node 1 and 18 which should be red the whole time.

The second effect is Bars. applied to the Top Axis model posted earlier.
4 white and 1 red  2 repetitions, 1 cycle
direction Down.

The effect is perfect, exactly as expected.

So back to the first effect, is there a issue using the same node multiple times in a model?
It only seems to light all occurrences of the node the first time it is encountered, and ignores all later occurrences.
Since nodes 1 and 18 are the axis the effect is rotating on, they need to on during the entire effect.

I think it just comes down to the math in the effect.  When it goes to calculate where to start I'm sure it's probably rounding to the nearest integer so the number of nodes and the effect settings and make a big difference on what spits out of the algorithm.  Just tune it to something you like.  I think you are over analyzing it too much.  I rarely ever look at the node level.  Even if there is something not perfect in the algorithm then we'd have to decide is it bad enough to affect all the people that have already used that effect in their sequences.
