Unfortunately, those two things rarely go hand in hand.  I have been using my EDM for about 6 years and it still works flawlessly.  Sound quality is just like the local FM stations.  (although......... this is Idaho.......)

Quite a few people have used these with success.

Are you using the one from EMDDESIGN.com?  I would love to be able to find a concise reference of what the various options are, pro/con, compatibility, etc.

Yes, those are the ones.  I have the EDM-TX-LCD-EP.  Very small footprint and easy to use.

I've looked at the site, but can't even see the basics for how to set one up, make connections, etc.

I'm sure I could get one, and play with it to figure it out--but I'd rather have some sense of what I'm getting into (and what I'm getting out of it), before I dive in.

For the EDM if you are connecting to a FPP (from falconchristmas) than there is lots of good info on how to connect it up - it even works nicely with RDS. I find with the EDM when I lived in Toronto there was a ton of competing radio stations between Toronto and Buffalo and surrounding areas but I was still able to get a frequency that gave me about a 1/4 mile radius around the house. You do need to make a few solder connections for the power with the EDM out of the box but I'm sure you can find one that is ready to go without any soldering.

Note that EDM has a sale on until the end of the month or so, which means: free shipping and rubber whip antenna.
