I have been having a lot of difficulties with Xlights.  Saved sequences would load differently on subsequent boots.  My layout would keep reverting to a previously saved incarnation...etc.  I discovered tonight that the .xml extension is used also by Final Cut Pro, within Logic Pro X on my mac.  I found a ton of my "missing" xlights .xml files there.  Is there a way to prevent the merging of these file types in the future?

Firstly we don't use .xlm....do you mean .xml?  A .xml file extension is common among hundreds of programs so no we aren't going to be able change behavior.  Plus programs don't just go grab files and move them because of the extension so I'm no sure what problem you are experiencing.

In xlights you set a folder for your files under the setup tab.  What folder did you point to in that tab?

xml is so common now.  even MS Excel reads and writes xml files.

Show us that you've got that folder on your desktop configured as your show folder. Create a new sequence and save it.  If the new sequence is in that show folder, you're good and it's unknown how those other xml files got into your LogicPro folder.

You have multiple files with the same name. You aren't backing up to this folder are you?

I guess I'm a doubting Thomas.  I don't believe the OS would ever say hey...I see an xml file so I'm going to move it over here instead of where you told me to save it.  I'd like to see some video evidence.

You must be clicking on the file to open it.  That is what "open with" does.  It has nothing to do with saving files.  You would be better off starting xlights and then using file open.  That would have taken you directly to the show directory where the files were stored.

macOS isn't going to move specific file extensions to another folder.  If you double click to open the xml file, like Jim stated, the default program associated with xml files will launch.  More than likely this isn't xLights.  On my desktop system, that default program is xCode.  Another Mac will have a different program yet.  Open the xml directly from xLights and this shouldn't be an issue.
