Matrix for Business Use
« on: November 04, 2016, 08:39:12 AM »
I work at a bowling alley part time.  He has seen my Christmas and Halloween display and wondered if we could incorporated to the side of his building for advertisements and or announcements.  It close to a highway and I told him if it was possible then it would for sure get drivers attention.  I was thinking like a 16 string mega tree on its side like a screen or something but I have not messed with a matrix yet but like the i of being able to make my own size based off my budget.  Of course I would need help in designing a person that looks like they are bowling to make this really stand out.  Any input good or bad is welcomed.

Thanks for your time as I know its getting close to the really busy time.

Make sure to check with a city or Township first where you plan on doing this. Many of them have rules and regulations on signs that might prevent you from doing this. I've had to deal with stuff like this many times over. On the other hand if you don't mind potentially losing the money and effort put into doing this sometimes it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission. I just dealt with a situation on signs recently where are the city kept on telling me I couldn't modify a sign I told them fine put it in writing, they kept dragging their heels for almost a year until I pushed them to get it in writing then they turned around and gave me a permit to modify the sign.  They're good at ordering people around but they're afraid to give you evidence that could come back and jeopardize their cushy job

Would something like 4 of these be possible?

Thinking 8' x 16' would be a decent size.  I dont know if this would be something that could be left up year around or not.  Guessing that mostly would be the actual matrix material that might have to be replaced more often?

Thanks again.

I would give an example of something that you would like to display on the matrix, for example, just text, or pictures as well. 16 strings will be very poor resolution. Once you know what you will want to display then knowing how many strings will be easier to define.

Would mostly be using for text and some pictures.  Pretty much like a mega tree of some type.  That is why I was thinking to get 4 of the 4x8 matrix kits and stack them so it would be 8 x 16 but would be 48 strings.  I believe it would be 48x100 pixels.

The problem I worry about in these scenarios is that you will become a critical path.  Should you no longer work there or are not available who is going to maintain the data.  xlights requires a fair amount of learning to use and changes over time.  You might be better off looking for a more end user friendly piece of software using the same type of hardware.  I have a client who uses a PI and video monitors to display the building directory on a monitor near the elevator on every floor.  I'd bet there is commercial software out there to do what the owner wants that would be less of a burden to him or you in the future.  Just sayin......
