Color wipe over existing effects
« on: November 23, 2016, 09:09:51 PM »
In the attached picture you can see I have my PARs and RGB tree doing a long effect. During a small portion of that effect, I would like to do a color wipe across my "All RGB" group. I'd like for the effects to keep going, but be interrupted by a vertical bar of a different color going from left to right. I'm sure this is possible with the right combination of effect and layer settings, but it is evading me.

Yeah we render top to bottom for models on the grid so if you sometimes want All RGB first and sometimes last you'd need to create another group maybe AllRGB2 and put all the models in it and move it lower in the list.

But what you can't do is blend effects on different models.

It would be great if you could.

With both the All RGB group on top and bottom the effect is the same: The "All RGB" effect completely overrides the model effects. What I am wanting is to layer the effect over the longer effect on the models.

I think keithsw1111 is correct that it's not possible to blend effects over multiple models/groups.

I know this is a feature you wanted.  What's funny is Matt Johnson is actually using this feature in his show he built using xLights for the San Antonio Zoo.  Not sure you saw his video since it was on Facebook.  Matts got setup months ago to be able to build xLights so that when he asked me or other for enhancements he could compile and use them immediately.  So when he wanted this feature a month or so ago I got Dan to tell him how to do it.  I believe it was 3 lines of code you need to add/modify.  There were some side effects we didn't think about.  What happens is since we don't re-render everything when you make an effect change is things where blending down into other models and when you made changes it just blended the new version of the effect to the model(s) below it without re-rendering those models so it can end up smearing the effects and Matt was having to do full renders or click on a bunch of effects to fix things.  So to implement this properly we will probably need a more advanced rendering scheme while editing but that means it may slow things down while you are working.

Gil, thanks for that information. I guess I need to checkout Facebook.

I just saw his video on YouTube.  I'm a believer in xlights, so nobody needs to sell me... but, if people aren't convinced about xlights after watching his video then they just aren't normal. :)

What's funny is his post on the xLights Facebook ground mentioned how he switched to xLights but he left that part out on his post on DIYC.  Guess he didn't want to ruffle any feathers since they are more pro Vixen3 on that forum.

I didn't see him say anything about xlights on YouTube either.

This was from the Facebook post with the link to the show:

"Okay guys, my show is up on YouTube now. I am very unhappy with the video and the fact that all the elements are so spread out that they look small and sparse. You never even really see the snowflakes which have some of my favorite effects. The 12R moving heads are only visible in the haze too in the video but are very bright an impressive in person (go figure). It is a "first year show" for all intensive purposes as I switched to a new sequencer (xLights) and a new venue (San Antonio Zoo) and all the elements are new. Hope you all that were waiting for it are not disappointed. If you have a chance please come see it in person it is much more impressive..."

Gil, quick few questions:
1.  Are there any plans to implement blending in a future release?
2.  Is it possible to share the steps necessary to add the code like Matt did?

Hope you had a great Christmas & New Years.

James

I don't think we have any plans...most of the time none of us know what others are working on until maybe a couple days before it's done.  On rare occasion one of us may mention an idea before we do it.

I don't know what steps were needed for that change...Matt contacted Dan to get the instructions.
