xlights quit opening last night for me

Really it is true. I have been using it for years and updating. I was at November update when it crashed or stopped working. I have looked to see if it is running in the back ground, but it is not. I downloaded the latest 55 and it still will not open. Firewall, Smart Screen in 2 places and antivirus are all disabled. Any ideas as to the issues from my old and new friends here? Oh, I am running Window 10

try renaming your show directory. There have been times when we are doing something at launch time but before we show anything on the screen.


if this fixes it, we would like the xlights_rgbeffects.xml file to see if we can duplicate the issue

I uninstalled again, rebooted, then went through the registry and deleted references to xlights, rebooted again, then reinstalled.  I am now back up and running.

I noticed last night as I trying to get a recording of my show, that the music and lights were not synced.  So after I tried a couple of things to get things synced, being a good IT guy, I said let me try a reboot.  This solved the issue.  So I said to get me through this year, I will add a task to reboot my computer each day.  I placed a shortcut to xlights in the startup folder and gave it a shot.

Computer restarted but xlights did not.  So I then attempted to add a task for xlights to start up few minutes after the reboot.

The task would not work so I went to my "normal" short cut on the desktop and that is when I discovered that xlights would not load.

Not sure if it is something with trying to make it run from a scheduled task?

Yep, FPP is free. Yes, there is cost for a raspberry pi or similar, but $30 or so.

I'm confused by this statement.  FPP is the least expensive and most reliable part of my whole display.  Don't think I could cost-justify NOT having it

So far this year, the only time anything worked is when I started it manually. Then it only worked for about an hour.  From what I read, it looks like I would need a power supply and the Pi, something to put it in, etc.  and I know that there are always those costs that you do not plan on.  Last night I was so frustrated with things that I was done, I have had to change sequencing programs after the start of the season and it still did not work as I feel it should....I just need to quit for the season and do a lot of testing during the off season.   I have a very small show and I am not planning on growing any more than what I have right now.  A simple 24 channels 10 minute show that one runs 3 times on a Friday night.  The rest of the time the lights are just on.

We all get frustrated. After a break, come back and plan to use FPP. It is the best way to play your show.

After rolling back to xlights 2016.10, I had the first fully successful night of running the show from start to finish, with no intervention.

Thank you to everyone for words of encouragement and advice the past couple of weeks!

I hope to now get a video of the show this coming Friday.

So I have been pretty busy with "life". The other day I finally went to the xlights web site and downloaded the latest version- I have to say I really like what you did!  Pulling the scheduler out has really helped my situation.  So far, other than learning the new nuances, the past three nights it has worked great as I run tests to try and figure out what went wrong last season.   So far the program has started on time and ran the show on time every time (as long as I left it alone).  I need to continue testing and see what happens when I shut it down abruptly.  But again - So far so good and KUDOS to the programmers!
