Edit Display Elements will not show
« on: February 26, 2017, 05:43:16 AM »
So I'm "trying" to transition from Vixen 3 after using it for 3 years...

I created a few models and started a sequence.
I added a model (after starting the sequence) and now trying to add it to the sequence.

I cannot get the newly added models added to the sequence. If I start a new sequence, it appears.  I'm using Version 2017.5

I've tried Right-Click in the scheduler
View->Display Elements from the main menu

nothing happens..absolutely nothing..

What am I missing?

Hey JCook
If I understand what you are trying to do, try the following.
Once you have the sequence open, go to the Sequencer tab.
You will probably be in Master View
You will see the timing track and any display elements that are currently available.
Right click in that list and click on edit display elements
From there, you will be able to add or delete elements from your sequence.
Hope that helps

I think you are making the right decision moving from vixen. I know it can be frustrating. It may be something you are doing wrong, or maybe not. It might be easiest to do a remote session with someone. I can probably do something later if interested.

James,

Thanks for the offer, may take you up on the remote assist, I do have TeamViewer, skype

My main reasons for moving from Vixen are Whole house effects and performance. I do a lot of Lip Syncing and have it on a matrix, moving to P10 panels this year, I created a 196x96 matrix.  In a 3 minuted song it takes Vixen over 13 minutes to open the file something I just can't work with.

I opened a shared show directory I got from someone else and I could open the Display Elements window but then I opened a different one and it wouldn't open.

I created a new show directory, added a few poly lines to a layout, created a basic sequence the added a new poly line to the layout, tried to add it to the sequence but can't get the "Edit Display Elements" window.

Here is the simple show directory I am working with, maybe you can see if you can get the Display Elements to open.

I will try in a little while. In the meantime, usually when you have issues with toolbars or windows, try doing a default/reset. Can't remember where, but it should be easy for you to find at the top.

Just looked at manual (not at PC), look under view, windows, then reset to default. See what that does.

By the way, I recommend downloading the manual, it has some good info.

I have the manual, already reset the perspective, that's not it.  Even if it's not in the perspective it will open in the other profiles I have.

I wasn't able to open either.   I opened xlights_rgbeffects.xml and deleted all references to perspective.  Then I was able to open.

That worked for me too.  Tried it on a couple different shows that didn't work before.  I think i'll report it as a bug.

Thanks,
Jay

If you report it as a bug make sure you include your files by doing a package logs.

Ok, Have to ask, why you say this?  Not to start a this vs that discussion.  Did you use Vixen before?  I'm considering going to the May xLights in Vegas, actually booked a room just in case.

Yes, I used vixen first. Long story short, my experience is that xlights is just better. Vixen is pretty and has cool features, but xlights handles effects and models better, among other things. I've never met any xlights developers personally, but I've talked to others that have and you will have a great time. In my experience, the xlights developers and I have more things in common, meaning the things I would like in a sequencer they have or add without asking. The vixen guys seem to spend time on silliness. Example, all effects should be location based. They still haven't figured that out yet. I think it was you that mentioned of crazy render times. Xlights is different, but I think you will love it.

Yes, It was me that mentioned of render times.  My show is not huge by any means but the matrix I'm building is really bogging down Vixen, 13 minutes to open the file.  It is LipSync effects on the matrix s doing it.  I'm going to recreate the same some in xLights and see how it performs, that will be the deciding factor for me.  I really like the interface of Vixen but the location based effects and performance are the big ones.

Thanks for your input.
