Candy Canes and Channel Assignments
« on: June 14, 2017, 08:29:24 PM »
This will be my first year using Xlights (LOR the past 5 years).  I have 11 pixel candy canes, 50 nodes on each.  When I am trying to create them in the layout, I'm not sure how to handle the channel assignments.  Can someone point me to a place to read on channel assignments for elements.

It would help us help you if we know the layout of the pixels and are they already wired up?  It may need a custom model and someone may have already created one.

channel assignments generally follow wiring/ controller setup. if you have them in a row and the output of cane #1 is tied to input of cane #2, etc then just run them sequentially all tied together. if you have to break them up on separate ports of your controller,  you will need to know what are the limits of the controller.

looks like there is a recent video on start channel on the xlights website.

sorry for lack of info.  There are 11 candy canes , they can be wired together end to end in small groups or be alone.  The past 2 years I have had them in groups, like 2 or 3 to a group.  This year I want the most flexibility since I am putting all my pixel props in one are of our drive through and want effects to be able to travel across all the props or be able to provide an effect individually.

Are the 50 pixels in a straight line,  zigzagged, up and back?

What controller are you driving them with?  550 pixels in one output is 3+ universes.  For laying out channels (you can put every element one after another) no big deal but reality is that is probably not one output so -maybe- think about a logic break in the channels to help your head remember how to handle them.

My first reply still stands.  I need to see a picture of a single candy cane and I need to know if it's already wired up.  The reason is we don't know what model you can use until we know how the pixels look.  Some candy canes have 1, 2, or 3 columns.  If you've already wired it then we need to create a model that matches your wiring.

Start channels are the easy part once we figure out which model to create.  The built in Candy Cane assumes all the pixels are in a single line.
