mapping file question
« on: July 20, 2017, 09:05:24 PM »
Just wondering if Lilia's been swamped with mapping file requests.  She gave me a quote back in May  and stated that it would take 2-3 weeks for the job.  I haven't heard a thing and am afraid my work might have fallen through a crack.  I am not good at sequence programming and the ability take a professional sequence and convert it to my layout is very appealing!

Mapping is not hard.  Have you tried it?  You will not break anything or destroy anything.

You put the download files in a separate folder.
You change xlights setup to that folder.
Open the sequence and save it.
Go to tools export models, that will create a ?.csv file
Open the csv file in excel or some other spreadsheet program and save it as a spreadsheet.
All the downloaded sequence models are listed in the first column.  Insert a column to the right (as column 2)
Print it out if that helps.  I only print the first couple of columns to save paper as the rest of the data is useless for mapping purposes
now play the sequence several times and list your matching model name in the new column
Close the sequence
change setup back to your own show folder
start a new sequence with the music of the song and all your models as if creating one from scratch
go to import, import effects
point to the downloaded sequence folder and the seq
you get a table with all of the downloaded models on the right and all of your models on the left
drag the models from the right to the left
click on save mapping - very important
click on ok
all done for the first iteration
save your sequence, play and see how it looks
now if needed go back and do the import again, but first load the mapping file you saved, by default it should be in the folder of the downloaded seq
make any changes in model mapping, SAVE it again.  I usually save it to the same name or I get confused as to which mapping file I like, but it is possible to create several different maps and it can change the way the result looks
repeat as necessary.

Jim--I changed a lot of model names between last year & this year.   Could I use the "load mapping" functionality as a renaming tool while treating last year's files as imported from someone else's sequences?   I have changed one of my files from last year and it was a bit time consuming.  Would like to do it once then use the load mapping tool from that point forward if that is feasible.   Thx.

Absolutely and that is the simplest way to update all your old sequences.  Be sure to use new file names or remove the files from the 2017 folder and leave them in the 2016 folder before you do the import.

I generally would not be manually editing mapping files.

Thanks Jim.   I changed my folder configs last year--I keep the ones for the current year in my "Prairieville" (my house!) root directory and keep the others in by-year folders or imported, as applicable....   Info appreciated!

who is manually editing mapping files?  There is no mention of that here, only editing the mapping file by loading it and modifying it and resaving with the same or different name.

I almost thought the same thing Jim.  When I read the steps you laid out it sounded like you were creating your mapping file manually with Excel.  By the end though I decided it was only used as a reference.
