360, 270 or 180 degree mega tree advise
« on: November 04, 2017, 06:42:14 PM »
I am looking for advise or suggestions on my mega tree.  I am building my first pixel tree using 24 string each with 50 pixels.  I am looking for suggestions on if I should do a 360, 270 or 180 degree tre. What does everyone think would look best for effects and simple pictures (snowman, Santa or candy canes)?  I will be using xlights.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, help and advise!

Let me first welcome you to Xlights. One thing you will get is 6 different answers but just remember they are all right for their own reason. Now to answer your question. Its more where is the tree going to be placed. Are you on a corner lot and the tree can be viewed from all sides, 360  Or as in a case like my house where the tree is up against the house so a 180 worked out the best for me. Next thought, what type and how are the lights mounted. Bullets on the black strips from Boscoyo as the go around a 360 tree the lights in the back are hidden so they don't interfere  with the lights in the front when lit.  How about Bullets tied to cables, you will see the lights in the back lit and interfere with the patterns in the front. this link is my tree 180  24 strands but 150 high at 1" on center         https://youtu.be/PFU9GZeokls

If you have images you will want density and no bleed through from the back of the tree ... i would go with 180.

Thanks for the replies.  I realized I would get several answers and none would be wrong, but just wanted to see what you guys did that worked and what looked best.
I am using bullets mounted on black Boscoyo strips. And I am on a corner lot. The way I usually set up my tree it, it could be seen by about 270 Degrees but the road has a slight curve to it as people drive past.
   Thanks again for the help!

I use nodes installed in strips with 4 inch spacing with a 270 degree configuration. The tree sets about 35 ft from the road and most of the images that I put on the tree look pretty good. Some I had to resize for better viewing on the front because the image wants to stretch all the way around. My tree was able to be seen from a wider viewing angle because of the way it's laid out so I choose to have a 270 degree tree. So what I've learned from my tree if my main focus was just images for my tree I would probably do a 180 degree tree because it would save a lot of time trying to adjust the image. But for all the other effects I really like having a 270-degree tree.

I have 3 trees all using 3" spacing, all 12v using Boscoyo mounting strips.  I'm also on a corner lot with two trees in the front of the house and a third on the side (corner side)  The front trees are 180, but the side tree last year was a 270.  I might skinny that down this year as I am going to take that tree up double in height from last season.  If I skinny it down (I am just getting ready to remake the strips) I would be somewhere in the middle around a 225 just to save some nodes and because I think it will still look ok.  I can always add a couple more strands once I put it up if I do not like it as I have plenty of controller ports available.

The worst thing about 180 and 270 trees is the uneven loading at the top. Depending on the topper (plastic or metal) it may bend down a little. Not enough to fail but enough to bother you (and my/your spouse).

I always put empty mounting strips (plural) on the back side and tie them down to the ground to provide more support for the topper.
