Repo, I've tried the appimage, and crashes when I attempt to load any sequence. I've attached the dump from the appimage

I've tried both, but I will try again with the AppImage as I am experiencing stalling out on the Windows version, which I am not suspecting XLights, but something strange with my Windows 10 box.

I'll likely report back tomorrow unless I get a chance to try tonight..

Thanks
Tim

Ok, So this is strange. I know I tried a couple AppImages and no change in behavior.

Tonight I tried AppImage 29, 36 and 37 (2017) and Gif's worked.  ???

Text worked in AppImage 29, but not in 36 or 37 and also crashes in Repository Version.

NOTE: Text crashed as soon as first letter typed in text box.

Mint Linux 18.1 for reference of tested OS (64-bit)

Definitely strange testing tonight. Hope this helps in figuring what might be going on here.

If I read this right then it works in the latest version 2017.37?  So go with it.  We always fix bugs so no reason to dwell on why something crashes in older versions.

I'm using Linux Mint Mate 18.1 (Mate Desktop) but have tried others.

This morning, I tested a few things. Using the AppImage 37, I have had crashed with text effect when I tried a blank sequence and used "OS Fonts". Crash happens as soon as I type a letter in the text box. Any fonts, btw.

In another already made sequence, I was able to drop a test effect and start typing, no issues, even with default OS Fonts selection.

This make absolutely no sense, whatsoever.  ???

I prefer Linux over Windows for many reason. Windows, I get stalls, takes about 60-75 seconds to render a sequence, where that same exact sequence takes 7.6 seconds to render in Linux. Hopefully a solution, whether a bug, or configuration on the OS can fix this and this discussion can bring about ideas and such to try.

One thing I'd like to try to see if it resolves problems is to run XLights on the version of Linux that it is tested and compiled on. I'm curious to see if there is an issue with certain distros outside of a specific one.

You're experience with xLights on Windows is not typical unless you still run a 386.

Gil,

I'm not blaming XLights for that at all. I'm blaming Windows for sure. I'm not an MS fan by far. Windows 10 has so much junk running in the background, that it drags my system down quite a bit, which is sad because it's 6/12 core i7 with 32 gigs of RAM. Linux runs so much smoother and faster on it, I really prefer using Linux.

XLights itself has been overall great. In fact, running the Windows version on wine in Linux has proven better than directly on Windows, lol.

Yeah and I have Windows 10 and don't have any of those issues.   I've used Linux and thought it sucked.  For one there are like 1000 versions of it and almost none of the software packages I like to use run on it.  You basically gotta be a programmer at the command line level to use it.  If you like it fine but don't try to convince me.

For me, 38 did not resolve the issue.  Other than the picture effect, I'm not having any other issues.  But the picture effect is killing me.

Question: What kind of display adapter are you running, NVIDIA or AMD Radeon. I'm thinking that the issue is related to NVIDIA display drivers.

The problem I've seen with linux is people get wrapped up in the details, distros for example, chose one of the majors (ubuntu, mint, centos, fedora) and don't worry about it.  They are all basically the same.  As to software there are open source versions of most packages that people want, may not be the "name brand" but meets the needs, think office and Libre.  Not trying to convince, just a perspective.  However one thing can't be argued, the same hardware platform will out perform windows by a wide margin.  And command line isn't required anymore than command prompt is today in M$ Winders.

FYI, the linux version is what caused me to switch to xLights from Vixen3.

Doing some more problem isolation and I believe the issue is related to filenames with spaces and how linux handles them.  I have some sequences that work, and others that don't. What I found was the ones that don't have any filenames with spaces are the ones that work, while any sequence with a picture effect with a filename of spaces, fails.
