Need help upgrading
« on: December 05, 2017, 11:08:36 AM »
Hey there.  We've been using X for over three years, but I've been very bad about updating to the newer releases.  I'm currently on BETA Ver 2016.47 from August of last year on a MAC OSX.  My question is how exactly do I upgrade properly to get my system current?  I have a feeling just using the most recent will skip some important things.  As well, will this cause problems with my currently saved sequences?  Finally, are their new effects since my release, for this is what I'm looking for most with regards to upgrading.  Thanks in advance.

In theory you can just upgrade. The risk you run is upgrading from such an old version is uncommon and therefore riskier so make sure you back everything up first.

As for new effects I can think of at least 3. Shapes, candle and liquid. Shapes and liquid have videos on videos.xlights.org. A Bunch of effects also have new options.

John I just upgraded and had the same fears as you. What i did was I copied everything in my xlights folder over to a removable HD. This is a post from Sean.
 just copy your show directory.

example: my show directory is C:\Users\sean\Documents\xmas2014

if i go into there and copy everything to a usb flash drive, I then go to a new computer and copy the contents of the flash drive to
c:\newshow_xmas2014

i then launch xlights on the new computer and the first thing i do is set the directory with a "File,Set Show Folder" command to c:\newshow_xmas2014
it should come up and be an exact copy of what you had before.

everything that is a model is stored in your xlights_rgbeffects.xml files.
all the data in a grid is stored in the sequence xml files.
xseq files are the least important files you have as they can be recreated with the sequence xml and the sound file. If you lose the sequence xml then you have lost all the work you did setiing timing, putting in effects. None of that info is stored in an xseq file. xseq is a fully rendered, binary file that is used for playing the show.

follow the copy procedure above and you get all your pictures, sound files, movie files, xseq files and all xml files. In other words, eveything.
Actually I did this three times, twice to thumb drives once to another computer, I spent too much time on these songs to lose them.  I upgraded with no problems though, you probably will to.
good luck

Thanks so much to both of you.  So Keith, what version of upgrade should I use to take advantage of the new effects and hopefully not have too many issues with such a long period of no upgrades.  I see there are several but didn't think picking the most recent was most effective.
