Trying to understand the active field on the setup tab...
« on: January 07, 2018, 08:27:07 AM »
Hey everyone...first post for me!  I'm a newbie and building out my first show for 2018.  Thanks for all the great support.  I don't see how this would be possible without the great community out there.

I am setting up the channels on my new F16V3.  There seems to be different opinions on whether or not you should just set up all 96 universes from the beginning to allow for future expansion of models.  Can you just set them all up and then set the unused universes as inactive on the setup screen?  I'm only actually using about 25 universes for my first show.  I guess I'm just a little confused about what that active field actually does.

If its inactive we don't send the data to the output.  But if you are only using 25 universes and you allocate 96 it will slow down the program a little for one.  It takes longer for xLights to startup the more universes you have allocated.  Also we will be creating output data files that are 4 times bigger just to hold space for a bunch of zeros.

Hmm ok. So would you recommend keeping any unused universes open or just go back and add more as needed?

I just add them when needed but I've rarely ever used more than 15 universes on a controller.  Just make sure you use universe/channel notation when setting start channels and nothing will change when you add more.
