Windows
« on: January 13, 2018, 06:41:38 PM »
I'm still getting all my models set up, and watching one of the videos by Sean he mentions that he doesn't like the window frame model. He mentioned he liked to be able to sequence the vertical strands separately I think.

So my thought was to use the window frame model and then make submodels for the vertical and horizontal strands.  But others say to use a line or poly line.

Anyone care to help explain or give their opinions on the pros and cons of the different ways to do Windows?  I can just see myself setting them up and then later figuring out that I should have done them differently.

Thanks!

I think any way will work.  You also gotta consider was the video from Sean older than the sub-model feature?

As Gil stated, you can sub model the vertical separately from the horizontal parts of a window model. Then you can group them together as well. With sub models you have great flexibility in laying out your design.

The video also showed how to make sub models so I don't think it was real old.

I have already made all the sub models with verticals and horizontals.  I was just curious if there was "more to the story" per se.  Sounds like I'm good to go!  Thanks again.

Well unless he stated why he doesn't like the Window Frame Model I don't know how to respond.  Currently the only reason to not like it would be if you built it in a counter-clockwise direction because I don't think we added that option yet.  Or if you have something weird like opposite sides that have different numbers of pixels.  Otherwise that model works fine and you can easily create sub-models with it.

As I recall, the original window frame model is built on a matrix basis rather than as 4 lines.  That caused problems when doing some effects that did not work the way that we expected them to.   Something like applying the bars effect and the two verticals would light up as one when you really wanted the lights to chase around the window.

Now that we have render style buffer options it doesn't matter.  You can do a per preview or a single line effect.
