Geodesic Sphere model request
« on: May 17, 2018, 02:35:52 PM »
Icosahedron Alt 2v geodesic sphere

Last year I created a 2v geodesic sphere model in xlights (the technical name for the sphere is Icosahedron Alt 2v geodesic sphere).  I had to model a 2d representation of the spokes of the sphere in a custom model in xlights.  I was able to get most effects to work, however, a pre-defined model in xlights would make it so much easier.

I have seven RGB ws2811 pixels on each spoke of the sphere (120 of them) for a total of 840 pixels.  Is there any way to create such a 3d model in xlights to address effects evenly over the entire surface of the sphere?

Here is a 3D modeled representation of the sphere and the layout I used to map the effects.

Not sure a pre-defined model is much easier.  Sure it would draw it "prettier" but underneath it's still gotta be represented as a 2D matrix and there is no clean way to do that.

Also what we need to create a model would be a formula for how to distribute the lights.  It would need to be flexible for different model sizes and number of faces.

And xlights would be opinionated about how the sphere was wired.

So you’re saying there’s a chance... lol!

There's a good chance I will add a sphere model.  I was already planning on that.  Not sure I'll try to tackle a disdyakis triacontahedron.
