Falcon case w power supply question
« on: July 24, 2018, 03:50:51 PM »
Hello, I was looking for a case like what is offered with the F16V3.  My question is, Does this need venting?  I would think it would get pretty hot if sealed off.  Has anyone modified this case with vents and or possibly a small pc fan?
Thank you
Ken

Sometimes you need to think outside the box. Most of my hardware is mounted in the basement. I do have 2 receiver boards in the attic, 1 in the garage, and 3 outside in the yard The winters I experience starts with 2 good weeks of rain then a freeze of 10 to 15 deg. I figure its best to lose a 17.00 board verse a 200.00 one.

No it doesn't really get hot. This isn't a pc running high power processing and graphics.

Where do you live KAS?  My boxes get so hot I need the vents even when they aren't powered up...lol.

I run most of mine in central Florida with out ventilation. On the few hot muggy nights we get that time of year they get warm, but not hot

Yeah Florida probably doesn't rank very high for getting hot in December.  We were at 111 F yesterday and 107 F today.  Not the hottest place in the world but if you know anything at all about derating electronics venting is just the smarter way to go.  They don't put fans on those power supplies so that they can blow into a closed box.

I had a controller shut down last year due to over temp, it had small vents but it's location meant it got hotter than other controller. Temperature was over 100F most of the day and still around 100F when show started, got to love daylight savings summer at Christmas  :D . Will be adding bigger vents like below this year.

So if you're in an area like mine or Gil's where you're getting temperatures of 100F+ I'd vent your enclosure. A lot of us in AUS use vents like the CG-V60 on https://www.da-share.com/product-category/fans-vents-filters/ these are designed for PC type fans. Amazon has similar vents  https://www.amazon.com/BUD-Industries-IPV-1115-IP32-Vent/dp/B00L3QTZRY/ref=pd_sim_328_4

Tips:
hot air rises so you may want to put a passive vent at the bottom as well as vent at top.
use a mesh on the vents to prevent insects getting into your enclosure.
venting should be designed such that rain can't get into the enclosure.
I know just enough to be dangerous :0

Thanks to all, I am in the Chicago IL USA area but I'm going to start with my box indoors exiting through the wall.  Being new and small with no expansion board I should be able to get away with this.  I will start with 2 small vents.
Thanks again!!
