Start off/on screen, end off/on screen for shape effect.
« on: July 27, 2018, 09:23:42 PM »
I was wondering if it would be possible to add start off/on screen, end off/on screen for shape effect. Particularly as it applies to the cross, I am trying to run a cross up a tree and I want it to float off the top of the tree, I have tried running it sorter and longer but it always disappears with about 1/2 of the cross still on the tree. I know I could use a gif or something similar, but thought it would be easier if xlights did it form me.

Can you share a sequence with just the effect. Not clear to me exactly what you are doing.

Try an oversized render buffer.  You'll need to right-click in the black area, select edit, change the 100's to 200.

Oh and I guess the 0's need to go negative.  The limit is -100 in that direction.

Here is the expreset, its only 2 layers.  I want the cross to start at the bottom off scree, then scroll up the tree and off the screen.

You can see in this, the effect ends before the cross has made the entire tip up the tree.

Gilrock I am not sure what you mean?

Well then you need to research what you can do with that big black box in the Layer Settings panel.

So Gilrocks idea of an over sized buffer worked perfectly.

Had know idea you could over size the buffer, I only knew you could make it smaller.

Thanks for your assistance.

This led me on to something and I was playing with value curves in the render buffer.

It seems like when you apply a render buffer to just one of the four points, top left bottom or right, it opposite is also effected, OR xlights moves the whole buffer and everything inside it to the value in the curve. (see attached xpreset bouncing ball), is that what it supposed to do?

Because, if you then apply a value curve to the oppsite side the effet in the buffer "wobbles" (see attached xpreset bouncing ball 2)

Is there away to move the points and have the opsite point not move?  Essintaly I would like the ball to stay still but the buffer to move, and if you change the circile to across and the top bottom value you cuves to left right you may see why.... :)

Hope I explained this right.....

I'm not able to look right not but off the top of my head reaction its probably doing what's its designed to do because all the value curves do is change the parameter based on the curve.  What makes you think the other corner is moving?  You should start with an effect that fills the model like Butterfly so that you can see how changing the buffer affects the effect.  Moving only one corner will cause the buffer to shrink towards the other corner.

I used a round circle or ball as I can have it not move and see what happens then.

If L=left, R=right, T=top and B=bottom

I assumed that adding a value curve to L, would only move the L coordinate, but it appears as though it moves the entire render buffer in the direction chosen to the power of the curve.

So if the centre of the effect is X (X being the centre of the render buffer), applying a curve to L, also moves X to power of the curve.

If you then go and apply a second curve to the opposite corner, R, so that you have a collapsing render buffer, xlights tries to apply both values to X resulting in a vibrating effect.

I thought it would shrink the buffer, but in fact it appears it just moves the entire buffer, to the power of the curve in the chose direction.  I want it to shrink the buffer!

I need to see the sequence to see the problem.

So the outcome partly depends on the effect.  But what happens is the new buffer size is sent to the effect so it draws based on that buffer size.  Some effects like my Fan effect work off of fixed sized and not percentages so they will not shrink.  Other effects will shrink when the buffer is made smaller.  If you move the Top down the Center point also moves down but its not 1:1 its 1:2.  The Center moves at half the rate.  Its working the way it should.  The only way to not move the center point is for all 4 corners to be moved equally.

He posted the preset so just drop it on any matrix.  I think its working as expected but you can double-check me.

I don't think there is "problem" as such, I am just trying new things, want an effect to do a certain thing and thought this would be a way to make it do it.

All a learning thing I guess, and I am sure if I look hard enough there will be other ways to achieve what I want. :)
