Copy Paste from one sequence to another problem
« on: August 05, 2018, 02:28:27 PM »
I am trying to copy effects from one sequence to another sequence.  (IE:  Mini trees effects to 2nd sequence). Have tried the Ctrl-c and Ctrl-v.  2nd sequence dose not get the copy.  I do not quite understand the "dummy" method.  I am a newbie just trying to learn xLights.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ctrl-c in 1st instance and Ctrl-v in 2nd instance works.  I just tried it to verify.  Did you click on the grid in the 2nd instance to establish the paste point of reference?  You need to click the top row at the point where you want the first effect on the top row of the source data to land.

Didn't work.  My procedure...1st sequence:  Highlight Mini Tree group, using beats timing, clicked on last cell of group, moved to 1sr cell, pressed shift and highlighted whole row.  Pressed Ctrl-c.  Went to 2nd sequence.  selected 1st cell in Mini Tree group, pressed Ctrl-v.  No copy.  Tried it again and then rendered, still no copy.  Both sequences made sure the Path Tree group is highlighted before selecting cells.  using the same sequence in both open copies of xlights 2018-22.  1st sequence has effects, 2nd set up as new sequence for same song and tried from there.  Still no copy.  Thanks for your help.

I thought I heard rumors of a bug with a copy and paste between to open Windows of xlights.
What I heard was that it was a problem until you did a copy and paste Within the target xlights sequence then the copy and paste would work between the two.
You also might want to get to the latest version.

No it was never a bug.  The Paste option is greyed out until xLights see you do a copy.  So instance #2 has no idea if you do a copy on instance #1 of xLights.  So I've always said do a copy in instance #2 to prime the copy pump.  It will allow the paste option to appear.  BUT that is not required if you are using the hotkeys.  Control-V will always paste.

magis just for kicks have a blank document open in Notepad and paste it in there.  You should see a bunch of text representing the XML for the effects.  If not then you never copied anything.  It does work but maybe you have something blocking it.  No way for us to debug this unless we get an exact copy of what you are trying to copy or you make a video or something.

I thought timing marks need to be of to copy? But wouldn’t it work with importing into the new sequence, or are you just trying to get a few effects?

The question is are the effects actually changing colors to show they are selected.  I usually uncheck the timing marks and then drag a yellow dashed box to make selections.  Sounds like you are using timing cells to make selections so just make sure the timing marks actually look selected.  First can you even paste inside the same sequence?

So, I think I have found a reason why my Copy/Paste is not working.  The sequence I am trying to copy from was one that I converted from LOR.  None of the effects on models that were in the original LOR sequence are able to be copied or pasted.  If I add an effect to the to this sequence through xlights, I am able to copy and paste those effects to the new sequence.  Am I on the right track with this?  Thank you again for your help.

It depends on what you are calling an effect.  If its truly what we call an effect that has boundary lines that you can drag and resize then it can be copied no matter how it got there.   Now if you imported LOR data as a data layer then those are not xLights effects that's just raw data.  If its at the node level and doesn't have boundary lines its just data.  If you instead did an Import Effects from a LOR sequence then it would have created xLights effects that can be copied.  You can also right-click a row heading and convert the data to xLights effects.

Thank you Gil.  I used the convert and selected a song, then LOR data.  I guess that is why everything is data.  How would I import so that I would be able to copy and paste effects that came from LOR.
I see what you mean by the right click method to convert to effect, line by line.
I really do appreciate all of the help you and others are given me.
I have added pixel arches to my sequences this year after my LOR CCPixel unit died last year.  Also I have pixel mini trees (119 pixels single strand wrapped) and the Walmart tiny trees (8 wrap up, 5 pixel star, 8 wrap down) that I have converted to smart pixels that I will be trying to sequence.
WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO???
Thank you again.

You would need to use the "Import Effects" option under the Import menu.  It will require creating mapping from your LOR to xLights models.  Its too large a topic to teach in a post.  I'm sure there are videos but I don't keep track of what's where.

Thank you Gil.  One more question if that is okay.  Do you know...If I convert the sequence from LOR to xLights, which would be just data, then add effects to models in xLights, can I then re convert the sequence back to LOR and will all of the sequence (old LOR data and new xLights effects) be operational in LOR.
or
Would it be better to make a new sequence in xLights of the same song that I use in LOR, sequence the models that I want, then convert those to xLights, and then copy and paste those to the original LOR sequence to get the actions and effects for the whole LOR sequence.
Confusing huh?  Just spitballing here.

Yes unfortunately you could probably export back to LOR if you wanted.
