Splicing Pixels into Reindeer shapes
« on: August 10, 2018, 09:02:51 AM »
For years, (2006) I've used a group of 10 Reindeer in my display.
Rudolph, the Eight named ones, and then Olive makes #10

But they've always been solid white lights. First incandescent, then LED, but always white.
I want them colored but didn't want to just wrap them in pixels. They are basically powder coated cages, designed to fold up into a small box. Not worried about that, but I want them to remain 3D in appearance.

To that end, I want to put pixels INSIDE the cage, then cover the cage with something translucent to give it a glowing appearance.

Now to the real question - splicing pixels. As shown in the attached drawing, I'm thinking about starting the string at the rear (Pixel #1), then between pixels 2 and 3, splicing into the power and Data to go down each rear leg. Then at the front, between pixels #8 and 9, sending a splice down each front leg. So even though there would be 37 pixels (as drawn but not tested), the controller and xlights would only know about 17 pixels.

Has anyone done this? Will data integrity be good (good enough?) without using an F-Amp?

I think it's just a bad idea and over-complicating things.  Just buy a string of 50 and run it around inside the deer.

What's the fun and adventure in that? (But is probably what I'll actually do)

I have an angel from Target that my wife retro-fitted with 121 pixels.  It looks really nice if all the pixels are controllable because when you run effects they look smooth as they do the color transitions.

Just run a string of pixels
Inside he deer, if you want to keep the Channel number down you can always group them
