Going ALL PIEXL??
« on: December 14, 2018, 03:39:39 PM »
Wife said she wants to go all pixel next year.  Loved the Mega tree and saw a video of a house all pixel. Said "lets do that"  I said it will cost and she said how much.  Now I am search that question.  Where is the best place to buy pixel strings?  Think I want to go string and not strips or ribbon.  Currently everything I have is LOR.  But, now would be the time to upgrade/change as needed.  So next question is controllers.  What is the best controllers to use. Going to run XLights.  Dabbled with FPP on Raspberry PI3B+ but did not get it to work with LOR, using computer now.  12 v vs 5 v. I am using 12 now.  Also want a P10 panel but not sure of size, about 4 foot by 5 or 6.  She wants to be able to play video.  Maybe a projector???  Built a couple of controllers this year and that was not difficult so, I can do some assembly as needed.  Any suggestions will help in deciding what to use and finally the cost.
Merry Christmas

Best rule of thumb is $1 per pixel.

Of course pixels cost about 20c each but everything else adds up.

Ok So you just opened a can of worms here. First there is no right or wrong here. You are going to get 10 different answers here so get ready. This is just my opinion. This is my 4th year and I set up twice each year. at home and camp for Christmas in July. I'm running 2 Pis and a BBB. First Pi master does audio and 2 Falcon controllers F16v2 and F16v3  Second Pi runs projector in the garage (back of a white shower curtain in garage) The BBB runs 16 P10 panels. (just over 8000 LEDs there) I like 12vcd Pixels Less power injection needed. (don't be afraid of it) My big mega tree uses 3600 LEDs out of my other 10,000. I also run 9 receiver boards. I don't like my controllers outside. Weather here starts with rain then snow then freezing cold. What else do we need? power supplies. I have 9 units One 5vdc for my ferries wheel and icicles the rest 12vdc. Wire lots and lots of wire.  I use from 18-4 to 14-4  My mega tree 6 wires of 14-4 at 35 feet long. Now what holds the lights. Boscoyo has strips that hold lights. Then all the little stuff zip ties wire connectors outside boxes. And audio outside speakers and a FM transmitter.

Change your profile to show your location.  Then get in the habit of looking at folk's locations and see if you can find someone within reasonable travel distance.  Arrange to meet them during daylight hours for a walkthru of their setup and what kinds of equipment they use.

Just ask her to write you a check for $10,000 that should give you a good start. LOL

LOL that would be great.  Figuring it will be between 2 and 3000.  The P10 Matrix will be a good part of the cost.

If you can catch the panels on sale you're looking about 500.00 for a 4 x 4
16 panels, 5 volt power supply, a BBB wit a cape. and build your own box.

Not sure any more as I was getting them from Pixel Sequencing at 11.00 per panel. The only other one I can think of is Ray Wu.
