Moving Models To New Computer
« on: January 03, 2019, 08:01:09 PM »
My old computer is about to bite the dust, so I've bought a new one and installed xLights on it.  I've been trying to transfer my sequences to the new computer and I'm having trouble getting models onto the new computer.  I did a package sequence of one of the original sequences, put it on my flash drive and transferred to my new computer.  I tried to open the sequence in xLights on the new computer and it opens, but I can't get any models to show up.  All the info seems to be there, but no models.  I get a box that opens up and asks me how I want to map the models, but it only gives me the option to delete them or map to other elements.    Where am I going wrong?  I attached a couple of images, not sure it will help

Looks to me like your rgb effects file isn't in your show directory.  Make sure you set that folder and the file is in there before opening a sequence.

Whereever you extracted that packaged sequence needed to be your new show folder and you needed to point xLights to the new show folder before you try to open any sequences.

I tried setting up the show folder, but I wasn't successful.  I attached some more screen shots.  When I open up a sequence in xLights it takes me to the page shown in screen #4.  When I open it up, I can get the music, but no models or effects.

Your rgbeffects file in the show directory (first screenshot) is a backup file, not an xml file.  Make a copy and change the extension to xml, and you should be good to go.  Make sure xlights is closed when you do that.

First off I have to ask is "xlights Sequences" the name of your show folder because that sounds like a folder just for storing sequences to me.  I see the folder "xlights" above it is that your show folder?  Whatever folder is your show folder that is where you put the xlights_rgbeffects.xml, xlights_networks.xml, and xlights_keybindings.xml files.  The sequences can be in other sub-directories but should be relative to where they used to be on the other computer.  This should be as simple as making it match the folder structure of the other computer.

Why not just copy the whole folder to the new computer.  Then delete stuff you do not need.  In the meantime everything should start up.

I can't seem to get this to work.  I started working with xLights 3 years ago and I think that the sequences were originally in my general Documents file as individual sequences and I later moved them to a new file that I made so that I would have all the sequences in one file. (named xLights on my original computer).  Would that have messed things up? All files are sub files under my Documents file.
