layout: location issues
« on: January 18, 2019, 01:00:04 PM »
I'm thinking about a new prop to my existing lights. It will be ( I hope) a poly line to mirror the house outline. The outline is up left side; across the gutter; down fight side, forming a upside down U  shape. What I want to do is to complete that into a box. when I start with the poly line to complete the U shape into box shape I'm getting really strange location numbers in poly line size location field. I'm seeing numbers like 78180.94 X3; -10343.37 Y2; -8495.61 Y3. yet when I put a single line the location info is completely different. I noticed this before I updated today and also after the upgrade. I have deleted it twice and redid the layout but no change.  Thanks  Charlie J.

Ok so a few things.

1)  Yes it looks like the PolyLine is displaying positions off by a decimal place so divide what you see by10.
2)  The PolyLine displays positions differently than Single Line.  PolyLine doesn't display its World Position but maybe it should.  The World Position is the location of the first point.  The point values you see for PolyLine are the offset from the first point so its more of a relative positio.
3)  The Single Line does show the World Position but it's really the same as X1.  The point values in Single Line are absolute values instead of relative.

I'm not sure why it ended up this way maybe an oversight from me.  I would probably say each model should probably show it's World Position and let that be edited and it might be nice to have the option to display the points as absolute or relative since there are times where you want one or the other.  Would have been better if we had ironed this out before the main 3D release.

It would be nice if all the positions are the same format. It was hard to get my existing models to line up with the new models. I needed the sides to line up to complete the house outline. I did finally get the models to line up. Thanks  Charlie J.

If you have a house mesh with materials it's pretty easy you just zoom in and when you move a point you see it disappear under the surface of the wall of the house so it's easy to place it on the surfaces.

I'm still struggling with line ups. I still fine it odd why the complete change of numbers on the layout. The upper outline is numbered with 278;747.91;278;747.96;-1 (?). the lower part is 1304.57;-4286;76151.35;-3820.53;76071.8;3075.05. I see no part of any number that resembles another number. I want the vertical sides to  line up, by chance I got the left side to line up but not the right side. The more I work at it the worse it gets.  Of course the horizontal lines to be level. The upper set was easy but not so the lower part.  How can you help me?  Charlie J.

I guess that when you updated (3D) the location numbering changed. I tried to make a new polyline around  the existing polyline none of the numbers was the same. The old polyline was done last year, with the addition of 3D the location numbers was changed, so the old does not align with the new number wise. Charlie J.

All PolyLines must be using the same numbering system.  What you are probably seeing is like I said the points are shown as relative to the starting point and there could be scaling involved.

So what am I to do? Delete the polyline that I like and redo it so the numbers are the same?  Thus have possible problems getting the sides and top & bottom to line up. Charlie J.

So the answer is "time with my psych for my ocd".  When there is to be props that are to be lined up for it to look good is NOT ocd. All I want is for the lower section to line up with the upper section. I have seen other peoples displays that different props are lined up and the effect looks great. I have the same desire and its not ocd. I think you are out of line>>>

All I can do is try to suggest how you can work with what you have cause I don't feel like touching code right now.  Take the lower section model and write down it's Y value.  Then drag it up to the upper section.  Zoom in and align X visually.  Then just type the Y value into properties to put it back in place.

Sorry that I reacted the way I did. I did figure a way to build my prop. What I did was draw a window frame around the area. Then I put over it the poly lines the way I wanted it to be seen. That way I got the lines to be the same up and down. I guess I do not understand the number arrangement you used for the polyline. I will work it out within my show computer. Charlie J.

Well I already explained the numbering was up above.  I agreed it wasn't consistent and should be changed.  PolyLine is displaying relative positions instead of absolute.  So at some point I expect it will be improved and you will be able to do what you were trying.
