Define “good spiral effect.”  What look are you trying to achieve?

What kind of model are you putting it on.  Normally that effect is for a mega tree.  Just play with each parameter and watch what it does.  The parameters you need to get a certain look are dependent on the size of the model.

Have you looked in the  Shared Effects Preset   there is a few spiral effects you can down load. each one has a number next to them that will tell you how many layers it needs. Looking at how those are made you will get an idea of how to make them.
