Sphere Wireframe
« on: April 09, 2019, 06:43:39 AM »
Does anyone know who might be able to produce a 3D wireframe that would align with the sphere model in xlights?  Ideally, I’d like something about 36” that could be split in half for storage. I’ve found a couple things out on the interweb but nothing quite fits the bill.

I’m don’t see anything like that here.  Are you implying this would be a custom request?

On their website they kind of hint towards doing custom work.
Seems to me that they would be best suited for doing what you want and if you ask the worst thing they can say is no.

I'd just like to chime in here and pass on personal experience.

When it comes to wireframes, there are a lot of people in this and all the groups that do a very good job.

With that said, there is a reason why Doug had to cut off his orders on December 22, 2018 - for frames to be delivered during the whole of 2019!  He is that good!!!!

Yeah. I saw he was done taking orders for 2019.  That is crazy!

Fortunately the design I found for a garden sculpture is exactly what I was looking for...I think.  Now I’m trying to find a way to model it in xlights. It is basically 2 sphere models with one turned 90 degrees. The wireframe comes in 2 halves and I intend to wire them separately so I can dismantle for storage. Im sure it will take some combination of clever modeling in xlights and maybe virtual strings in my controller but will need to figure out. It looks like you can’t zigzag on the sphere model so not sure how to make the wiring work. Maybe I just need to model as a matrix?  Below is a picture of it in 2 halves.  Ideas?

Wow.  Talk about a great opportunity to pioneer a new design.   ::)

Though I don't have an answer yet, this one will keep me thinking.

Please keep us informed as this looks VERY INTERESTING!

I think it has some potential for sure. It will be in a spot that people can see it from all sides up close so I really wanted something 3D. Due to the complexity, I think I will just have to wire it up first and find a way to fit the model to it.  I’ll be sure to post updates of my progress.

FYI - we are creating about 2 dozen "ornaments", ranging from 3' tall to 8' tall to spread around the park.  They are essentially spheres.  The lights on them only go from the south to the north poles (wired from the bottom), with about 24 strands each.

It is the cross sections on your image that is very intriguing.  If you are going to populate that portion, I am at a loss as to how to "wire" them in xLights.  Once again, please keep us up to date.  Interesting.

I will wire them as 2 separate spheres. So it would be just like the spheres you are talking about except it would be like having one inside of another.

How are you wiring your pixels?  Do you zigzag up and down each segment?

After looking at the pix. The first thing that jumps at me is arches.

That could work...lots of arches.  I’d like to be able to represent how it looks on the layout tab if possible but yeah, I may need to abandon that idea. There are probably a few options if I don’t want to render “per preview”.  I could use arches or a matrix...candy canes, etc.

As you stated that you were going to join the two halves together, that would be 12 arches in each direction.  24 total?

We are still building our prototype sphere, so haven't had a chance to see how the sphere in xLights works.  Looking forward to how yours comes out.
