Author Topic: Dying to convert from LOR - S5 (Read 6742 times)

For the past 4 seasons, I have been dying to convert over from LOR to XLights!

To set the stage here, I have been doing a Christmas light show for the past 12 years. All this time I have been using Light-O-Rama software. The show has morphed over the years using each and every version of their software until I ended up where I am today, which is using their latest and greatest S5 software suite. I have really grown to HATE Light-O-Rama and their software. They are sooo far behind the curve it is infuriating. This frustration has been growing year after year.

Each year (about this time), I find myself downloading the latest version of XLights with the thoughts of flipping the switch and converting all my shows to XLights.

Now let me say...I freakin' love XLights. I've been toying around with it for 4 years now, but, i've never once been successful at converting my LOR sequences.

I just signed up on this forum for the purpose of posting this. I want to convert, but, it just doesn't work. My shows are completely messed up when I do. I see you guys developing this software on an almost daily basis. My question is why isn't more time spent getting the LOR conversion process to work?

I love what everyone is doing here, I love the software, and I hope to one day be a power user and finally ditch LOR.

We do work on the lor conversion but we get very little support from the lor users and we don’t use lor so cant do it alone. Problem is once they are converted no one cares about lor anymore so helping always falls to the new convertees and they are even less likely to help.

Then you need to get really specific about he problems and send use files that show it.

We do not have a copy of s5 so I need you to send me the loredit file that has a problem. Ideally with just the problem. A video of it working. Your xlights layout and the mapping file you are using for the import.

pyro...the hardest pill to swallow is throwing away that old LOR work you've done. I tried to keep my LOR work alive for a couple years and at some point what happens is your show grows and then the LOR setup does not match your show anymore and it becomes a pain trying to import the old stuff and add in the new stuff to the sequence. The best thing I ever did was decide to ditch all my LOR work and start from scratch in xLights.

And why don't we spend all our time on the LOR conversion process? Well we had it working just fine for LOR S4. LOR doesn't want to make it easy for their users to convert to xLights so they've made it harder. We don't sell xLights so what's the motivation for us. Keith already spent a ton of time on trying to make an S5 converter. How about this? Try asking the LOR developers why they don't work on a converter for bringing xLights sequences and layouts into S5?

I converted from Lor myself and if I had to do it again I would do what Gil said and throw everything away and start over.
I wasted way too much time converting things over, and I'm still dealing with problems from bringing my Lor sequences over.
In my case bringing over an Lor sequence produced thousands of small effects in xlights to make something on a Model that can be done with just one or two xlights effects.
To start you can go to the xlights drive and download some of the free sequences to get you started.

A big thank you to all of you for your comments! Please, please, please don't take what I said as a criticism at all. I think you guys are fantastic and I think the product you created is fantastic. If there was a frustrated tone to my post, it is all centered around LOR and not this community. I have expressed my frustrations with the folks at LOR and they don't care at all.

I think the answer to my problem is like Gilrock said in his post. Just rip the band aid off, throw away the LOR stuff, and move to Xlights.

With that being said, I am still more than happy to help out if you want it. I would be happy to share all the stuff you suggested if it will help you.

IF you feel that way I'm sorry if i offended , you and the team put up with the dumb shit we ask time and time again, and it must wear thin at times if not always. But we are a community and civility is not hard to maintain even when dealing with a bunch of idiots (i place myself in the idiot bunch).
