Visualize and Port Control Per String
« on: March 18, 2020, 12:10:30 AM »
Hello All,

With the recent update in xLights switching from Setup to Controller- I was a little uneasy at first, but I'm starting to like it. I do have one issue though, any of the props that use more than 1 string are sort of a mess when it comes to assigning ports. Here are some examples (across different displays, all with similar issues):

1. I have pixel trees that use multiple controllers. I can set each controller up to run the number of strings (by assigning only enough channels used for those strings) but the visualizer doesn't seem to assign the ports correctly and I can only see the first and last controllers in the visualizer, the other controllers show nothing (except Models in the controller setup).

2. I have a few props, such as a C9 roofline, that I have set up as a single line in xLights, that are spread across 2 outputs on separate controllers. The number of pixels on each string is different (one with 100, the other with 117). I can add the single line on one controller (showing one 2 outputs), but not across two separate controllers.

3. I know we can change the number of strings per model, but can we change the nodes per individual string? In my example above I have 100 pixels on one string and 117 on the second, in xLights I only have the option to change the nodes for both strings. I could add 2 separate stings in xLights but that makes sequencing a little challenging with certain effects (that's how I've had it set up in the past but I prefer to have a single string).

I guess my point is, I wish we had the option to place both strings and models rather than just models. This way when a single prop uses multiple strings, we can decide which controller and output each string is assigned to. Hopefully, that makes sense. I realize this could be a potential issue because you'd have to assign different outputs for each string, but it'd make my life a lot easier lol

Is this something that has already been planed or a new request? I like the new controller tab, just wish it was a little more versatile.

Bottom line is all this stuff is only for allowing easy auto uploading.  If you have more complex setups you can always set it up manually the same as its always been.

It is actually comforting to hear someone in the "core group" saying this.  With each "upgrade" I have been testing to make sure that the way we are and have been doing it doesn't get broken.  Thanks Gil.

I just saw the video this morning. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I'll watch it when I get off work tonight.
