Model-Custom Properties-ie Manufacturer and their number
« on: December 24, 2020, 02:35:58 PM »
I am sure I saw this in a video somewhere but unable to locate it.

Is there a place to add the manufacturer name and their model number?

I was goofy enough to change the model names provided on the downloads to a descriptor type.

ie: flake-1, flake-2, Mega-Star, MiniTree-1, arch-left, arch-right

What is the common practice to keep track.
Sorry if this is a simpleton question. Due to family health issues, again, I had to walk away from this hobby and now trying to get back at it.

Thanks for any help.

Edit: 12-26
I know I have different size snow flakes and stars and I am working on a parts list of things to buy. I have figured out most of it and have started an excel sheet to store the info.
I could have sworn there was a place in xlights layout to add this data to the props. Maybe not, it has been around a year since last working with this.

Again, thanks for any help pointing me in the right direction.

I am not aware of storing extra info in xlights, it may be there, but it is not goofy to change model names.  Having the manufacturers model names would not be meaningful to me.  A snowflake in the front yard, on my roof or on the side yard may all have the same manufacturer name, but it is does not make any sense in the layout.  I too keep most of my info in spreadsheets.  I also label my props and controllers with when and from whom I bought them.  I have id labels on all my controllers and keep info on them in documents (excel and word).  Been trying to document my pixels as to source and where I have them deployed, but it is too easy for them to move around as I grab them out of tubs to use in various places.  LOL.  Remember also that pictures (lots of pictures) are your friend when it comes to setup in following years or in answering questions in the forums and on facebook.

Thanks Jim, my problem really is just having to walk away and come back a couple of times. So I did not remember what sizes those flakes or stars were. I have figured them out so should be ok from here.

I see we can export the models (csv) and there is a lot of info in that file. I just added a column and will insert the vendor and model there.

Over my career I have been involved with many inventory/tooling number/shelf location types of systems. For the props I intend to just use simple numbers. What ever number is next will be used. Then I can do a layout and show controller-props, port assignments etc. Also numbers will be placed on the pigtails and corresponding cables assuming no changes to that prop.
At least that is my intention unless someone can explain a simpler way to play.

Thank you for the help

Good luck with your id system.  I suspect that when actual setup time comes the id# may not be as much help as you think.  Having something more meaningful that does not need to be looked up when memory fails us seems to work best for me.  But having a system of some kind is the way to go and you are headed down the right path.  Too many folks rely on their memory alone.

I agree. The system might change/evolve and that is OK.
The memory seems not so accurate anymore.

Thanks again

There is a description field that you can put anything you like into.
