Controller Connections : Port
« on: January 17, 2021, 08:01:30 PM »
Hey All,

I'm at the model level with a model that uses 2 ports....(say ports 2 and 3).  In the section for controller connections I know I assign the port beginning with port 2.....I understand XL needs to have the next port to be 3 if they're on the same model.....

Question....Do I actually have to add the 3 or will XL 'see' that I have 2 strings and just use the next sequential port after 2...If I need to physically add the 3 is there a protocol (commas between etc) that has to be used?

Thanx

In xlights you would need #strings=2   (2 Ports)
and Port set to 2 .. If you are using the visualizer it will show both ports 2 and 3 are occupied. If you look at the models pain it should show 2-3.

Thanks for the response AK.....

I'm not using visualizer......But what is a "models pain"?  Sorry if that's a dumb question but I don't see any place where it shows 2-3....

The Visualizer is part of the program just select an output on the controllers tab and hit the button on the lower right and take a look.

Thanks Gil for the response....

I'm assuming that's an option available in Visualizer?  I've never been able to setup visualizer and quit trying shortly after it was introduced.  Keith tried to help me but due to my layout he said the auto function wouldn't pick up everything...I don't remember why specifically but with that feedback from Keith I just set everything up without visualizer....

Now....if there's a way to "select an output on the controllers tab" some place other than in Visualizer I don't see it and would appreciate a hint....  ;D

Won't be on the controller tab if you want to do it manually you gotta set it in the model properties for every model.

Thanks for the confirmation Gil...

I just haven't been able to see more than 1 port per model when doing it manually.....thought maybe there was a way to see multiple ports on a single model that I couldn't find.

Oh well.....I don't upload from XL to my controllers anyways so I'll just set all the ports to "0" in XL as that's what I've done in the past....just thought I would add port numbers to jog my memory as to which were which when viewing the models in XL...

I believe it will allocate additional ports you just define the starting port.  Like mentioned above the #strings field usually determines number of ports.  If you don't plan to upload the port configuration to the controllers then its useless to enter that info.

I mean I guess it isn't useless if you use it as the method to assign universes.  By specifying the controller/port you can get xLights to map the universe or you just type in your start channels manually.

Yeah, I wasn't planning to use it to upload to the controllers.... Just thought it would be a place in XL to ID which ports were on a model....for future reference....  Not a big deal really....

Sorry typo on my part or was it autocorrect :-)

Models panel .. or the Layout panel   .. where it lists all the models. One column often on the right and hidden, shows the ports assigned to the model.
