Win8 x64 new install crashing
« on: November 23, 2016, 06:34:18 AM »
I have tried the past 3 versions of xlights on my main pc running Win 8 x64, 4690K cpu, 16gb ram, 980ti etc.

The software installs fine but when started, it doesn't load up, although it does show in start manager using around 30% cpu. If I double click xlights again another instance loads into task manager, but the program never starts.

I have xlights installed on PC's/Laptops running Win7 x64 to Win10 x64, but cannot get it running on this pc.

If you can find the xlights_log4cpp file and post it that would help.  It's usually created in your user directory like c:\Users\Noob\AppData\Roaming .... or maybe the Local subdirectory.

From the logs it is not clear what is going wrong but it is clear it is something bad. I can see it crashed in 52, 51 and now 40 ... not only that but it crashes lots of times.

I would start with the assumption there is something wrong in your show directory. Try renaming it and when prompted for it create a brand new one. If that then starts then I suggest you send us your xlights_rgbeffects.xml and xlights_networks.xml files to see if we can reproduce the problem.

If it still wont start then at that point I would be tempted to go in and totally delete the C:\Program Files (x86)\xLights folder and retry with v53 and repeat the steps above.

My son's computer had the same issue with xlights not starting up.  After the clean install of Win10,  xlights opened, but we noticed the hard drive light was on too much--this led us to a failing hard drive (downloaded the hdd manufacturers software to test it).

Also I've gotten xlights to fire up by making a new user account on the PC and viola it started right up...

This PC has never had xlights on it. I use an i5 machine in the mancave to do sequences and either laptops or falcon pi for shows.

This machine only has ssd's and all report fine.

Will check tonight with an alternate account.

So you have never ever run xlights on this machine. So it should not even know what your show directory is.

Tried on normal account,  freezes up as before

That's correct.  As I stated in my post,  I have tried the last 3 versions and end up with the same result -  I never get the option of choosing a show directory -  just task man freezing.  Xlights GUI never loads.

I think yours is the one crashing when a wxWidgets call is accessing the persistence manager which probably accesses the registry.  Do you have any anti-virus stuff running that might be blocking that action?  A ton of folks are running with no problems I'd try a different machine.

It runs ok on a new account but not on an old account with the same show directory. It has to be registry settings that needs to be deleted.

Probably this key and everything under it.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\xLights
