Spiral Tree
« on: December 02, 2014, 11:44:25 PM »
Does anybody have a model for a spiral tree?
Or have an idea how to easily create it, 300 pixels 30LED/M strip.

Thanks

Correction, 100 pixels, not 300.

I'd create 2 models... one a simple string of 100 pixels that is good with single string effects.
the other would use the picture you've taken, placed as a background in excel -- and following the custom model approach to number each pixel, starting with 1 in the spreadsheet.  this relies on the viewer's perspective of the tree.  it will look good head-on -- and it might look a bit iffy from the side.

Not what you want, but I have 2 of those spiral trees in my display and I just used a straight line up and down model. It works alright... maybe next year i'll take the time to do it properly

I am mostly done with retrofitting 3 of these spiral trees removing their multicolor incandescents and attaching the same number of WS2811 square pixels in their place.  I plan on doing similar to what Steve mentioned as well as making a single 3-string custom model to cover all 3 trees so that I can do effects across all 3 even though they have different numbers of pixels on them (50,63, and 120).  I also stuffed 6 of the square nodes into the star at the top, with one node in the center and one in each of the points of the star so I can change the color or do effects on the star as well.  White star, blue tree w/ twinkles, etc..

Be forewarned about that approach with the squares on top!! I did the same thing and whole house models will give you problems as the RGB pattern is different with pixels and square nodes. I was thinking about dealing with this by running those nodes on a separate channel and chaining the stars together but with my 7 mini trees spaced on the yard I'd probably have issues with distances. I created my whole house model without the star channels include...works good enough for me, but still isn't perfect if you want the stars to be the same color as the tree. Oh and I used 2 x $1 year end walmart tomato cages to build my tree. saved stripping down the old lights

Mine are all square nodes, sorry for the confusion.  I have the ones in the star pointed out to the points and the center one facing forward.  The ones on the spiral point up but have good side visibility.  My wife wants another 10-15.  :)  guess I have to keep my eyes open at garage sales this coming summer.  All 3 have lights zip-tied on now, I just need to solder on the connectors and put them in the yard with some effects.
