Setting manual timing marks
« on: April 03, 2016, 08:40:50 PM »
I have looked and looked and have not found what I thought I had seen somewhere on manual timing marks.   What I want to do is use Audacity to "tap" manual timing marks into a song but I could not find anything anywhere that said how to do this (or maybe this is not possible in audacity the way I want to do it...).  This part of the song is way too fast to "tap in" timing marks using the "xl tap" program, so, I was thinking maybe I can slow the song down to 1/2 speed (while maintaining pitch) in audacity, save that as a specific "slow" file, tap it using the xl tap program, pull that file back into audacity (but not sure how to pull in the xl tap file as a label file??), reset the file (with taps as a label file) back to 100% speed, then export that 100% speed label file into xlights.    Is there a better way to do this???  This just seems really clunky, but I sure couldn't find anything on this last night....  And I looked a LONG time!
THANKS

Using audacity plug-in beats or bars doesn't do what you need?

To do a tap track in xLights.

In sequencer grid add a new timing track for your tap track.

Start music playing.

Press the 'T' key where you want a timing mark inserted.

Stop music playing.

You now have a manually created timing track.

Simple.

I tried a few of the audacity plug-in methods and they weren't "catching" what I am trying to time.
I'll try the xlights method.   Didn't realize that was one of the choices; I must have missed that when I was digging around Sat. night....   Thanks very much for the replies.

From memory, I think I had good luck with one called note onset. This was for a track that was somewhat complex and the timings changed a lot.

yes there was at one time. you used the space bar to set the marks. It was done manualy about a year ago. Maybe help someone remember it. Not part of xlights.
   It was called (XL Tap)
   its at the release page

Why would you go to the trouble of using XL Tap when that feature is built-in?  Unless you're the one I remember whining about having to use "t" instead of the spacebar.

Gil, not everyone uses songs in 4/4.  The built-in audacity stuff is great, but it does struggle on complex songs. I think that is what he's referring to.

I'm sorry I did not explain myself too well. When I first got into xlights I was also into building Video games, MAME.
I was good at hacking key boards. I had hooked the space bar up to a drum pad and had my nephew, a drummer beat in my marks using Xl tap.

My point is I coded the xltap functionality directly in xLights.  No need for another program.

I've had a MAME cabinet since 1998 and I'm building a new one as soon as I take a break from xLights.  Sounds like you could easily wire up the "t" key since you said you were good. :)

My new one is already operational I just need to finish the outside and I'm building a new control board.

When You say MAME not many know what that means
I have made 5 stand ups
                    2 Juke boxes
                    1 cocktail table
                     and a Skeeball game
All started because I wanted Asteroids, and Tempest....

Well now you need to step it up and build a virtual pinball machine.  Here's the only handy photo I have which I can tell the machine wasn't completed in this picture because it doesn't have the orange DMD display under the backglass monitor.  This thing has 2 Playstation eye cameras installed and can track my head motion to make table movements for Future Pinball emulations and there is a accelerometer board that senses when the table is nudged causing the emulation to make the ball look like it's being affected.  It also has 7 contactors to give a thump on the cabinet when you activate flippers and bumpers.  You can play literally hundreds of the old pinball tables.  I really need to make a video of it in active.  Oh and you can see the old Hanaho Games Mame cabinet in the back.  Didn't build that one it was something you could purchase back in 1998.

Sweet..... I'll have to look it up.  Love pinball. But in truth when I was younger I drove and built stock cars.(NASCAR style) So next on my list is a racing simulator with partial roll cage.  Way off subject here. LOL....
